McDonald’s in Taiwan recently made a new commercial on the theme of “acceptance.” The commercial begins with a father and son sitting face to face in a McDonald’s restaurant, each with a cup of coffee in front of him. However, the father’s face looks very gloomy, as the son’s coffee cup has “I like men” written on it. The son awaits his father’s response, but the father maintains his silence, and, without saying a word, picks up his coffee and leaves, leaving the son all by himself, weeping.
Unexpectedly, after a short while the father returns with his coffee cup and sits down facing his son, who waits anxiously for his father to say something. The father still says nothing, but takes the pen from his son’s side of the table and picks up his son’s coffee cup with “I like men” written on it. The father then starts writing on his son’s cup. When he has finished writing, he gives the coffee cup to his son. Upon seeing what his father has written, the son’s eyes become moist. The father has added three words to his son’s coffee cup to make it read: “I accept that you like men.”
After the commercial went public, it immediately drew many netizens’ attention, as well as that of the homophobic Alliance of Religious Groups for the Love of Families Taiwan. Alliance secretary-general Chang Shou-yi said that McDonald’s should not openly advocate gay issues. The group issued a statement saying that it would launch a campaign to dissuade people from buying from or visiting McDonald’s, adding that even using McDonald’s toilets would make them feel tainted. After reading the organization’s statement, Chinese student movement leader Wang Dan said, “I am more concerned about McDonald’s toilets getting tainted by people like you.” Designer Nieh Yung-chen posted a comment in his Facebook timeline, saying that the organization should just emigrate off the Earth. Taoyuan City Councilor Xavier Wang reminded the organization that Facebook is also gay friendly. He added that if the alliance is determined to stubbornly oppose gay rights, it should remember not to use iPhones, search with Google or consume cola drinks.

As the priest Antonius Hambroek stood in the dim chamber of Fort Zeelandia, his eldest daughter clung to him, her voice trembling. “Father, don’t go. They’ll kill you, and what will become of Mother and my sisters?” Outside, the sounds of Koxinga’s relentless canon siege boomed through the fortress. The defenders were on the brink of collapse. Starvation gnawed at their resolve, and the air carried the acrid stench of spent gunpowder and rotting flesh. Dutch reinforcements from Batavia had failed to arrive, leaving the garrison isolated and hopeless. Hambroek’s face was calm, though sorrow weighed heavily on his
As we bundle up in thick coats to stay warm during the winter, there is a population that has already adapted to extremely low temperatures. These people live in the remote city of Yakutsk, the coldest city on Earth. Yakutsk is situated in the heart of Siberia, which is the capital of the Sakha Republic in Russia. This historic mining city began to flourish in the 19th century following the discovery of gold deposits. Given its construction on permafrost, the average temperature in the city remains below 0°C for over half the year, with winter temperatures dropping to an astonishing -50°C.
The Dutch introduced the Indian mango (Mangifera indica) to Taiwan in the 17th century. It is a green-skinned mango with thick fibers that get stuck in the teeth, but it boasts a rich aroma and a unique taste. In 1954, Taiwan’s Council of Agriculture introduced several mango cultivars from Florida, USA, including the Irwin, Haden, and Keitt varieties. After seven years of testing and domestication, the Irwin variety was chosen for promotion. Years later, the sample saplings started to bear fruit. These mangoes were large, with thin, vibrant red peels and golden pulp. The Irwin mangoes were mouth-wateringly sweet and
