Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je visited Japan last week and on his last day there he went to Naoshima in Kagawa Prefecture, which prompted him to write the following on his Facebook page:
“On the last day of my Japanese visit, we arrived at Naoshima in Kagawa Prefecture. Upon arrival, I immediately felt a sense of “serenity.” Naoshima used to suffer from pollution caused by a copper smelter. After local residents and the government made an effort to transform this town, it is now home to the Chichu Art Museum designed by architect Tadao Ando, the Benesse House and artist Yayoi Kusama’s Red Pumpkin, in addition to others. As I walked among these places, I had a sense of perfect peaceful harmony between nature and art. Contemporary Naoshima is itself an art museum.
“I also saw in Naoshima Japan’s ambition to reach out to the world. In addition to the international-level art and architecture, Naoshima and its neighboring islands also hold the Setouchi International Art Festival every three years, a joint venture by the Seto Inland Sea region, which allows the whole region to form a strong connection with art.

“I also visited many cultural and creative sites, and Naoshima made me come to understand the integrated marketing of tourism and culture. I believe Taiwan is also capable of developing its tertiary industry.
“My visit ranged from metropolises to countryside, during which I also spoke to important political figures from different parts of Japan and which allowed me to form a complete picture of the country. I took notes of the key ideas with my cell phone. After returning to Taipei, I will get to work right away!”
However, what is at the forefront of netizens’ minds is the main feature of this year’s Taipei Lantern Festival, the Fu Lu Monkey. A netizen opines, “Can you do something about that grotesque monkey after you return from Japan?” Someone else says, “There is absolutely no sense of beauty and art in that monkey.” Yet another says, “After this visit, you should know how to design the main lantern for the next Taipei Lantern Festival.”

「日本考察行最後一天，來到香川縣的直島，一到這裡就給人『寧靜』的感覺，直島以前是被煉銅廠污染之處。經過當地居民和政府的努力轉型後，有著安藤忠雄設計的地中美術館、貝尼斯之家，以及草間彌生的大南瓜等作品。走訪期間，我感受到自然與藝術寧靜共處的美好。現在的直島，本身就是一座美術館。」
「我更在直島看見日本向世界招手的企圖心，除了國際級的藝術與建築作品，直島與周邊小島每三年舉辦一次『瀨戶內海藝術季』，更讓整個瀨戶內海『共襄盛舉』， 讓整個地區和藝術更強烈的結合。
「我也到訪許多文創基地，直島更是讓我深刻領略到觀光跟文化的整合行銷。我相信無煙囪工業，台北一樣做得到。」
「這次參訪從大都會到鄉村，也跟各地的日本政要對話，讓我更清楚看到日本的全貌，我隨手把重點記在手機裡，回台北就要重回工作崗位啦！」
不過，網友們掛念的仍是2016台北燈節主燈「福祿猴」，有網友表示「回來可以先處理那個醜到爆的猴子嗎」、「那隻猴子完全沒有美感跟藝術呀」、「考察回來就知道下一屆台北市主燈要怎樣設計」。
