The United Daily News reports that a tourist on a day-trip to Chiayi County’s Renyi Reservoir was surprised to discover a warning sign installed next to a pier on which was written in large red characters, “Hazardous waters, over the years 10,000 persons have drowned.” The extremely high statistic left the traveler astonished beyond words and more than a little bewildered: could it be that something awful had happened here? Local residents complain, “This leaves tourists from outside with a really bad impression of Renyi Reservoir.”
Taiwan Water Corporation’s No. 5 District Office says that it installed the warning sign four years ago in cooperation with a Ministry of Education information campaign to educate students on water-related dangers. However, it says that the figure for drowning was always left blank. The office conjectures that the sign was the result of a prank and, after receiving a report, has taken it down. The Chiayi Fire Department says that over the years there have been a number of suicides by drowning at the Renyi Reservoir, but the number is nowhere near as high as 10,000.

A preliminary finding into last month’s Air India plane crash has suggested the aircraft’s fuel control switches were turned off, starving the engines of fuel and causing a loss of engine thrust shortly after takeoff. The report, issued by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau on Saturday last week, also found that one pilot was heard on the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) asking the other why he cut off the fuel in the flight’s final moment. The other pilot replied he had not done so. The Air India flight — a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner — crashed on June 12 and killed
