A police investigation found that a 30-year-old man surnamed Yeh, who had been imprisoned for drug-related crimes and earned a living doing odd jobs after being released in March, had befriended a 19-year-old man surnamed Huang, who shared the same hometown with Yeh. Because neither man had had any work opportunities lately, they drew up a robbery plan, preparing a watermelon knife and black tape to conceal their scooter license plate. On the evening of Oct. 3, they went to Tamsui looking for targets.
Yeh and Huang found a man surnamed Chou sitting alone near a construction site. They approached him and threatened him with the knife. To save his life, Chou handed them NT$900. Since the two suspects both worked at construction sites, they knew those NT$900 could be all that Chou had earned in a day’s work. Seeing his agony, they returned a NT$100 note to him, saying that, “We are all poor miserable people,” and left.
Two hours later, they spotted a female scooter rider surnamed Pu on the road. They waited until she parked her scooter, and then Yeh approached her and politely said, “I am robbing you of your money. Please give me your wallet.” Astounded, Pu thought she had heard wrong, but seeing the watermelon knife convinced her that she was in fact encountering robbers. She complied and gave them her wallet with NT$2,800 of cash in it.
On Oct. 6, police from the Tamsui Police Precinct went to Yeh and Huang’s lodging to arrest them. The watermelon knife and other items, the victim’s wallet and other evidence were all confiscated. The two men admitted the crime, explaining that they were released from prison in March, but because they could not find any jobs and did not have enough money, they resorted to robbery. After questioning, the police arrested the two.

Foxes are known for being cunning and resourceful, but a study suggests another surprising talent. Research from the Czech Republic indicates these creatures may use the Earth’s magnetic field when hunting. The study, led by Jaroslav ?erveny, tracked wild red foxes for over two years, recording nearly 600 hunting leaps by 84 foxes. Researchers found the animals predominantly jumped in a northeasterly direction, regardless of the time of day, season, or weather conditions. This preferred leaping direction resulted in a much higher kill rate, with foxes finding success on 73 percent of their northeasterly pounces on their prey. The results prompted
Earthquakes are among the most terrifying natural disasters, generating massive tremors and destructive forces as Earth’s crust shudders. These tremors not only lead to the collapse of buildings but can also trigger secondary disasters, such as tsunamis and fires. However, we can mitigate the impact on lives and property by mastering earthquake response techniques. The DCH three-step strategy, recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is crucial during an earthquake. “D” stands for “drop.” You should immediately drop to the ground, using your hands and knees to support yourself. This position prevents you from falling and
Continued from yesterday(延續自昨日) https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang The potential use of magnetism to improve hunting ability is not the only surprising aspect of the fox’s complex behavior. The furry creatures are also known for their wide range of vocal expressions. They can produce a surprising range of sounds — up to 40 in total. The most well-known fox vocalization is the scream-like howl, but they also use barks, chatters, and whines to communicate with each other. These sounds are used to defend territory, attract mates, and care for their young. Besides the variety of sounds foxes utter and their possible use of the
