Following the announcement of the results of the new-varieties section of the spring tea contest held by the Dong Ding Tea Production Cooperative in Nantou County’s Lugu Township, the results of the oolong tea section were revealed on Tuesday last week. Although production has fallen sharply by 30 percent this year under the twin impacts of drought and frost damage, the judges were as strict as ever. Fully 39 percent of the 3,539 items submitted to the contest were eliminated, which is the highest elimination rate ever and shows the judges’ determination to strictly uphold the quality of tealeaves submitted.
Lugu Township’s Dong Ding Tea Production Cooperative is on a par with the Lugu Farmers’ Association, both of them being important platforms for selling tea leaves from Lugu Township. Following the judges’ appraisal of the colors, taste and several other qualities of the tea liquor, they announced the results of the contest’s oolong tea section on Tuesday last week, drawing an audience of tea growers. The “special-grade king of teas” prize, which carries the highest honor, was won by tea grower Chen Hung-an. The other tea growers offered Chen their congratulations one after another, and they will all take part in a sales fair on Saturday along with the Farmers’ Association.
