Frequent incidents involving tainted food have had a heavy impact on Taiwanese consumers’ confidence in government and business, and on their ability to go shopping with peace of mind. On Tuesday last week, the Consumers’ Foundation once again published a list of suppliers whose honey products it had subjected to random sample tests. The results showed that as many as 47 percent of the products tested were not up to standard, and even well known chain stores and shops that promote organic living have been caught out.
The Consumers’ Association urged merchants to put more effort into quality control and inspection so as to live up to their reputations and the trust that consumers place in them. The association further pointed out that, apart from products made in Taiwan, honey from Thailand and Vietnam also featured among the substandard items. In view of this, the association urged the government to carry out more stringent customs inspections, so as to let businesses sell imported goods with confidence and ensure that customers can do their shopping with peace of mind.

消基會呼籲，商家應該在品管與檢驗投入更多用心，為自己的聲譽和誠信負責；另外，除台灣自產商品，不合格商品不乏標示泰國、越南產地的蜂蜜，政府更該嚴格把關，才能讓業者賣得安心，讓消費者買得安心。

Spoiler alert and shift blame 破梗&甩鍋 在新冠疫情期間，無論是因為封城 (lockdown) 還是居家隔離 (self-isolation at home)，人們關在家中使用網路的時間大增。這也讓一些原本只存在於網路論壇的用語廣為普及。我們來談一下破梗 (spoiler alert) 與甩鍋 (shift blame) 這兩個用語。 有位古典文學教授 Joel Christensen 針對領導統御與疫情控制寫了一篇以古喻今、相當深入的文章：“Plagues follow bad leadership in ancient Greek tales”，文中出現一些講法，可用來翻譯上述的流行語： In the 5th century B.C., the playwright Sophocles begins Oedipus Tyrannos with the title character struggling to identify the cause of a plague striking his city, Thebes.
