A woman shopping at a hypermarket in Greater Taichung was suspected of switching the barcodes of expensive products with lower priced ones to trick store clerks. Having developed a taste for it, she eventually tried it again late last month when she switched the barcodes on four items, amounting to a total of less than NT$2,000 for NT$10,000 worth of merchandise. A vigilant clerk discovered what she was doing and immediately alerted the police.
According to the police investigation, the suspect pulled off the price tags of expensive products when no one was paying attention, and replaced them with price tags for cheaper products before paying at the counter. The hypermarket had often been the victim of similar swindles in the past, and had therefore told its employees to be on the lookout for customers attempting this when they checked out. The checker immediately saw through the suspect’s tricks, blocked her at the counter and called the police.
The police hurried to the hypermarket and found a set of glass shelves, a latex foam pillow, a crystal chandelier, and outdoor LED lights in the suspect’s shopping cart when they arrived. The price of these products was NT$10,638, but after the barcodes were switched the total was only NT$1,996.

The suspect admitted that she had tricked hypermarkets in this way four times before. She said all the products were for herself and that they were not taken to be sold for profit, adding that she greatly regrets her misdeeds now.

When people talk about fast delivery or logistics, most assume these are modern inventions. However, the need to convey messages and ship goods efficiently existed in ancient China. As early as the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the governments implemented official systems to deliver orders and military information across long distances. Later, this system, known as yizhan, reached its peak during the Tang period and remained crucial to Chinese society for centuries. The main function of a yizhan was to deploy documents and personnel quickly across vast regions. Messengers would stop at these stations to change horses or rest. Sometimes,
