With many industries putting the economic woes of recent years behind them, year-end bonuses are set to follow suit and return to pre-crisis levels this year. According to a survey, employees in the real estate sector can expect to take home an average of eight to 12 months’ salary in bonuses, making this the most lucrative sector. It’s been rumored that Chinatrust Real Estate employees will take home up to 15 months’ salary in year-end bonuses. The financial and aviation sectors are expected to follow behind real estate as the highest paying industries.
According to reports, real estate revenues have increased significantly. Farglory Land Development’s after tax ear-nings per share for the first three quarters was NT$8.44, easily surpassing the NT$4.7 per share for the same period last year. Last year Farglory paid out year-end bonuses worth 6.5 months’ salary with an additional two-month bonus, but that figure is expected to increase this year.
The financial sector has also made a recovery this year, with bonuses expected to be worth about four to six months’ salary. Fubon Financial Holdings made NT$20 billion profit in the first three quarters so bonuses are expected to be worth at least five months’ salary, while Cathay Financial Holdings is expected to pay out six months salary in year-end bonuses.

Some parts of the technology sector have made a recovery, leaving last year’s spate of forced unpaid leave and unemployment behind. As such, year end bonuses are expected to be worth two months’ salary. HTC chairwoman Cher Wang’s comment that this year’s bonuses would “get people excited” has left employees looking forward to the end of the year.
The aviation sector has also begun to return to full health. China Airlines hasn’t paid a year-end bonus for the past two years, but sources say the airline has started discussions with unions, and employees are now hoping for a bonus worth two to three months’ salary. Employees at Eva Airlines, which only paid out one to two months’ salary in year-end bonuses in the past two years, are hopeful that this year the figure may be improved.
The Taiwan Railway Administration, a perennial loss-maker, has for the last 30 years paid out a one month performance bonus to all staff except those who score a grade B or below in their performance review. Employees also receive a year-end bonus, with 1.5 months considered the standard amount, although senior employees may receive an extra month. (LIBERTY TIMES, TRANSLATED BY TAIJING WU)

In another application of artificial intelligence, a team of archaeologists from the Nazca Institute at the University of Yamagata in Japan, in collaboration with IBM Research, have discovered 303 new geoglyphs in the “Nazca” region of Peru. Though these figures are not nearly as large as their Nazca Lines counterparts, their discovery has helped enhance the understanding of the transition from the Paracas culture to the Nazca culture. The AI model, assisted by low-flying drones, was able to accomplish what the naked eye could not—quickly and accurately spotting the smaller relief-type geoglyphs in the desert area. While it previously
The human body was not built for spaceflight, with its microgravity conditions, exposure to high-energy radiation and other issues. As a result, trekking beyond the Earth’s confines causes many physiological changes that affect an astronaut’s health. The issue gained new currency with the March mission to return astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams to Earth after they were stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) for nine months. WHY IS SPACE TRAVEL TOUGH ON THE HUMAN BODY? The human body evolved over millions of years to function optimally in Earth’s environment, which includes its gravity, atmospheric composition and relatively low levels of
