While South Korean pop stars, TV shows and movies continue to enthrall Taiwan, one Korean woman living in Taoyuan County is in the process of building a Matsu temple. Ground was recently broken on the project which is believed to be the first time a foreign woman has attempted to build a Matsu Temple in Taiwan.
When Pu Chieh-yu, 43, decided to build the Temple of the Loving Mother in Taoyuan County’s Lujhu Township, she only had NT$30 to her name. Pu said she first came to Taiwan to study Chinese in 1988, the same year as the Seoul Olympics. Soon after arriving she started having a recurring dream in which an old woman of about 70 or 80 years of age guided her down a lane with small sesame oil factories on either side. The old lady stopped at each factory and asked the owners whether everything was alright.
In a dream on one particular evening, after walking to the end of the lane the old lady stopped in front of a temple. In Hoklo (commonly known as Taiwanese), she said, “This is Beigang Chao-tian Temple. It’s a Matsu temple.” At the time, Pu’s language skills weren’t good enough to understand what the old woman meant, but after having the same dream for many years, she realized Matsu was trying to tell her, “You are here to serve Matsu.”
Ten years ago, Pu finally realized that the woman in her dreams was Matsu, the popular goddess. Then eight years ago, Pu was involved in a serious traffic accident but emerged unscathed and thanks Matsu for protecting her. After the accident she began following the will of the gods and set the ball rolling on building the Matsu temple.
Matsu only ever spoke to Pu in Hoklo or Chinese, and never in Korean. Pu believes that’s because Matsu wanted her to figure out the meaning for herself, and then spread the word to others.
Pu traveled extensively in order to find out about building her temple. She even joined the Matsu Temple Association in Taichung County’s Tachia Township. She said Matsu wants everyone to put effort into the project, and says that Avalokiteshvara, the God of Mercy, told her that, “A temple is built not because you have enough money. It must be built with the effort of each worshipper, gathering every brick, roof tile and fixing even the smallest detail. Only a temple built like this can release all living creatures from suffering, pacify people’s hearts, and lead them to righteousness.”
In one of her dreams, the God of Mercy took Pu to a cave with the words “loving mother” written on the walls. Because of this, she rented a property and set up a shrine to the Loving Mother. Three years later she set up a temporary shrine on a plot of land and enlisted fellow worshippers in activities such as weeding, digging, spreading cement and varnishing. She still only had NT$30, however, and as she worried about the temple’s prospects, Matsu once again came to her and said, “You have nothing to worry about. Just take the first step and you will find the way.” With the support of other believers, she raised enough money to buy a 1,200 ping (3,967m2) plot of land on which to build the Temple of the Loving Mother. Pu is confident that within five years she can raise the remaining NT$150 million (US$4.9 million) needed to complete the temple.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) has been used in cooking for over a century to enhance flavor. It is often found in Chinese dishes and many other cuisines. Despite its common use, many people misunderstand the safety of MSG. The bad __1__ of MSG started in the late 1960s, when a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine described symptoms like a racing heart, weakness, and numbness after the writer ate Northern Chinese food. While no specific cause was __2__, a series of questionable studies in 1968 began to point the finger at MSG. In one such study, neurologist Herbert Schaumburg and
Even as he grows older, Microsoft founder Bill Gates still fondly remembers the catalytic computer code he wrote 50 years ago that opened up a new frontier in technology. Although the code that Gates printed out on a teletype machine may look crude compared to what’s powering today’s artificial intelligence platforms, it played a critical role in creating Microsoft in April 1975 — a golden anniversary that the Redmond, Washington, company celebrated on April 4. Gates, 69, set the stage for that jubilee with a blog post reminiscing on how he and his old high school friend — the late Paul Allen
Australia’s strict immigration policies have long been criticized, particularly for how they treat people with disabilities. Having been residents of Australia for years, Scottish Laura Currie and her Italian partner, Dante Vendittelli, recently experienced the impact of these immigration policies. Their son Luca, born in Australia and diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, became the reason their residency application was denied due to the anticipated high healthcare costs. Had Luca been healthy, there would have been no objections to their permanent residency. This case not only highlights discrimination against disabled individuals, but also raises questions about fairness and inclusion within Australia’s immigration
The study had several issues. Small sample sizes made it hard to draw __7__ conclusions. Additionally, taking a __8__ like pure MSG on an empty stomach is likely to make a person ill in any case. Choosing individuals who already had a history of the symptoms could have created a bias because they were likely to __9__ the reactions again. When real scientific research on the effects of MSG was eventually done, many of the myths surrounding it were proven __10__. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other global organizations have found MSG safe to eat. Today, MSG
