An orangutan that escaped from its cage at a zoo forced authorities to close the airport in the central-western Colombian city of Pereira for around half an hour last week.
Panchito, 9, escaped Matecana Zoo and headed for the nearby airport. He was attracted by the noise of the airplanes.
The orangutan walked around the runway and the terminal. At first the workers and travellers were scared.

But many were won over by Panchito's friendly behavior . Some even ended up having their picture taken with him.
Zoo spokesmen said Panchito had always seemed curious about the planes that fly over the zoo.
The animal was caught after sitting down to look at a plane up close. Zoo veterinarians sedated him and took him back to his cage.
Airport manager Diego Lopez said planes stopped flying just in case, but that there was never a danger to the safety of flights.(DPA)

In 2023, an 80-year-old woman in Taipei suffocated her paralyzed son after over five decades of caring for him. Turning herself in immediately, she confessed that worsening health and anxiety about who would care for him after her death had driven her to act. The court, acknowledging her difficult situation, sentenced her to two-and-a-half years in prison while recommending a presidential pardon.
