The little black dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in the film Breakfast At Tiffany's went under the hammer for a record price at Christie's auctioneers in London last week, some six times the reserve price.
There were gasps around the room as the bidding mounted for the Givenchy fur-lined dress before a round of applause as it was eventually sold to a telephone buyer for £410,000 (NT$26,034,520). With commissions, the official price was £467,200 pounds, a world record for a dress made for a film.
The dress, one of three made for the film seen in the opening scenes, had a reserve price between £50,000-70,000 (NT$3,174,900-4,444,860 ).

Screen icon Hepburn wore the sleek, sleeveless dress in her role as Holly Golightly in the popular 1961 movie. The garment was sold on behalf of French writer Dominic Lapierre's charity City of Joy, based in Kolkata, which has worked for 25 years to help under-privileged Indians through a network of clinics, schools, rehabilitation centers and hospital boats.
Lapierre voiced astonishment at the price it fetched. "There are tears in my eyes," he said. "I am absolutely dumbfounded to believe that a piece of cloth which belonged to such a magical actress will now enable me to buy bricks and cement to put the most destitute children in the world into schools."
The money will help open a school with the latest computer equipment in the River Ganges delta region of eastern India. Before the sale, Lapierre said that £50,000 would open the school and keep it running for a year.

A: Singer Jay Chou is staging four shows at the Taipei Dome starting today. B: And he’s the first singer to ever hold concerts at the venue. A: I’m curious, how big is this “big egg” exactly? At 3:19am on a cold December morning in 1941, a father was jolted awake by violent shaking, loud crashes and the sound of breaking pottery and tiles. And then, a woman’s terrified scream. He instinctively reached for his wife beside him. She was not there. She must have gone to check on their youngest child in the east wing. He tried to stand but was thrown back down. The room shook even harder. Walls cracked open and ceiling beams groaned as pieces of the roof began to fall. Cold December air rushed in the room and fanned the fire
Have you ever wanted to go camping but were put off by the thought of setting up a tent, sleeping on hard ground and dealing with a lack of basic amenities? If so, glamping might be the perfect solution for you. Glamping, combining the words “glamorous” and “camping,” takes the outdoor experience to a whole new level. It offers the chance to enjoy nature while still having access to comfortable accommodation and modern conveniences. Instead of pitching a tent, you’ll stay in spacious, luxurious tents that are fully furnished and equipped with real beds, electricity and even en-suite facilities.
A: I’ve been a fan of singer Jay Chou for 24 years, since his debut in 2000. B: But this time, his Taipei Dome concerts have shed light on the issue of ticket scalping. A: Isn’t the law stricter after being amended last year? B: Yeah, ticket scalping is illegal, even if you only raise the price by NT$1 when reselling. A: Why aren’t scalpers afraid of getting caught? Maybe a real-name ticketing system would be better. (By Eddy Chang, Taipei Times/台北時報張聖恩)
