A romantic movie to rival Gone with the Wind starring Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe as star-crossed lovers will start rehearsals in the US this month. Filming will begin in Australia before the end of the year, director Baz Luhrmann said.
Luhrmann, who directed Kidman in Moulin Rouge said that Kidman and Crowe, both Oscar winners, had agreed to be paid less money to help convince Twentieth Century Fox to make the film.
"Russell, Nicole and I have been wanting to do a large Australian piece for a very long time," Luhrmann said. "We have some of the most extraordinary landscape on the planet and we want to get two of the most extraordinary actors in the world and put them, acting, in that landscape.''

The cast and crew will be mostly Australian -- including an aboriginal boy in a major role.
The love story is set in the 1930s and 1940s. One of the scenes will show the bombing of the northern city of Darwin by Japanese fighter bombers in World War II.
Locations have been chosen in the tropical northeast and in the Outback, but how much is filmed outside and how much at Sydney's Fox Studios has not yet been decided. Although the director prefers to film outside the studios, many movie studios prefer that directors film inside the studios and use computers to add in the background.
Australians are hoping that this new movie, which doesn't have a title yet, will fare better than Eucalyptus, another Australian film that was also supposed to have starred Kidman and Crowe. The two actors had signed contracts restricting them to a maximum US$500,000 (NT$16.3 million) each for the film.
