A continental cold air mass could send temperatures below 10°C in parts of northern Taiwan as well as Lienchiang and Kinmen counties today, the Central Weather Bureau said.
Under the influence of the cold front, temperatures are likely to remain at about 10°C or below in New Taipei City, Keelung, Taipei and Taoyuan, while the temperatures in Lienchiang County could drop to 6°C, it said.
The bureau also forecast temperatures below 10°C in Hsinchu, Miaoli and Kinmen counties.

Daytime highs yesterday reached up to 17°C in northern Taiwan, 27°C in Kaohsiung and Pingtung County, and 23°C in other areas, it said.
The bureau’s weather stations recorded evening lows of about 12°C in northern Taiwan, about 15°C in central and southern areas, and about 17°C in Hualien and Taitung counties, it added.
The cold front is forecast to weaken on Wednesday and Thursday, the bureau said.
As the cold air mass moves southward toward Taiwan, occasional rain is forecast for the whole country, with the probability higher in northeastern Taiwan and areas north of Taoyuan, while Keelung, northern coastal regions and mountainous areas of Taipei and New Taipei City are to receive more persistent rain, it said.
Daniel Wu (吳德榮), a former Weather Forecast Center director who is now an associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, said that when the cold air mass weakens, temperatures across Taiwan should rebound slightly.
However, with the arrival of a northeasterly seasonal wind system, temperatures are likely to drop again on Friday to below 14°C, Wu said.
On Saturday, temperatures should rebound slightly, he said.
However, by Sunday — Lunar New Year’s Day — another cold front is expected to affect Taiwan, pushing nighttime temperatures on Monday and Tuesday next week below 10°C, Wu said.

The object of Beijing’s expansionist activities is not limited to Taiwan and its use of pressure is not confined to specific political groups or people, the navy said in a statement. China utilizes a mixture of cognitive warfare and “gray zone” military activities to pressure Taiwan, the navy said, adding that PLA sea and air forces are compressing the nation’s defensive depth. The navy continues to

CONCERNS: Allowing the government, political parties or the military to own up to 10 percent of a large media firm is a risk Taiwan cannot afford to take, a lawyer said A Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislator has proposed amendments to allow the government, political parties and the military to indirectly invest in broadcast media, prompting concerns of potential political interference. Under Article 1 of the Satellite Broadcasting Act (衛星廣播電視法), the government and political parties — as well as foundations established with their endowments, and those commissioned by them — cannot directly or indirectly invest in satellite broadcasting businesses. A similar regulation is in the Cable Radio and Television Act (有線廣播電視法). “The purpose of banning the government, political parties and the military from investing in the media is to prevent them from interfering
