Former US president Bill Clinton also visited Haiti yesterday in a bid to accelerate international relief efforts for survivors of last week’s earthquake.
The inability to get supplies to survivors in Port-au-Prince is “frustrating,” Clinton, the UN special envoy for Haiti, said yesterday.
US troops have taken control of the capital’s airport and are helping provide security for relief efforts, the New York Times reported, without saying where it got the information.

Thousands of US Marines were expected off the shore of the capital yesterday to help relief organizations get supplies to survivors.
The troop increase and an expected request to the UN for more peacekeepers were coming a day after sporadic violence and looting in Port-au-Prince underscored how an uptick in water and food deliveries still fell far short of overwhelming demand.
Also yesterday, Canada announced it would send an additional 1,000 troops to support relief efforts in Haiti and will host a meeting of diplomats aimed at coordinating reconstruction efforts.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon said the 16 countries that comprise the Group of Friends of Haiti have agreed to meet in Montreal next Monday.
TYPHOON: The storm’s path indicates a high possibility of Krathon making landfall in Pingtung County, depending on when the storm turns north, the CWA said Typhoon Krathon is strengthening and is more likely to make landfall in Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said in a forecast released yesterday afternoon.
