The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday it would install vending machines offering needles nationwide to curb the spread of AIDS.

The plan was unveiled at the Legislative Home and Nations Committee yesterday, where officials from the Ministry of the Interior, the CDC and the National Police Agency were scheduled to present their plan to reduce drug-related crime and report on methadone therapy for drug addicts.
The therapy has been widely adopted by other countries and can be given to patients at a low cost. Some, however, still questioned the effectiveness of the treatment.
Minister of the Interior Lee Yi-yang (李逸洋) said that a drug addict spends on average NT$3,000 a day buying drugs, a strong incentive for robbery.
The therapy, on the other hand, costs NT$18 a day, which has helped reduce crime rates by 30 percent.
Yang said the center launched a massive campaign to fight AIDS last year.
By October, the nation had more than 1,000 agencies authorized to provide needles to drug addicts.
The measure should help reduce the number of AIDS patients by 50,000 by 2010, Yang said.
