The report in the China Times Express said the government is planning to replace Lai with someone familiar with cross-strait affairs and who has a strong financial and economic background. The report says that the candidate should also hold an official position in the government.
Officials hope that the next person selected to represent Taiwan in Brunei will be more acceptable for Beijing, the report said.
Even though the government is already making preparations to change its representative, it is still working with the Brunei government in the hopes of finding some way to send Lai to the summit.
Brunei initially agreed to Lai's participation but reversed its decision after it came under strong pressure from Beijing.
