A memorial ceremony was held yesterday afternoon for Lee Chim-hsin (
While nearly 100 Taiwanese businessmen attended the ceremony, support for a protest against the Cambodian government about the lack of security has been dwindling.
One of the suspects, Liu Shin-yi (
But businessmen from other countries and Cambodian official representatives did not attend as had been expected.
Some who attended the ceremony said the low-key mood of the service was a manifestation of recent disagreements between different factions of Taiwanese businessmen in Cambodia.
Lee was shot dead by one of two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle in front of his Phnom Penh residence last Thursday.
Soon after the murder of Lee, a protest on the streets and in the media was suggested by the China Business Association, with which Lee had good relations.
The intent of the planned protests was to pressure the Cambodian government to solve the murder and improve business security.
But a day after Taiwan state officials from Vietnam, along with Chung Shih-dah (
"Taiwanese businessmen are gentle, we don't march in the streets," Chung said at a press conference after he arrived on Saturday. "The planned protest is just a rumor."
Taiwanese businessmen said that governmental officials were afraid of participation by Chinese businessmen.
"This murder is an international issue, it's not only we Taiwanese who can push the Cambodian government," said a businessman, who declined to be identified. "Taiwan's government is concerned more with face than the real interests of Taiwanese businessmen in Cambodia," the man said.
He said the TBA could unite not only Chinese business groups, but also groups from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and South Korea, adding that this was why TBA influence on the Cambodian government was so strong.

Chen said what happened next would depend to a large extent on whether Taiwan's government would formally protest the killing.
Lee's body is to be sent back to Taiwan by Thai Airways today, as Vietnam Airlines said they did not have the facilities to transport dead bodies.
