Macronix International Co (旺宏) on Monday said it turned to a second-quarter net loss of NT$4.46 billion (US$131 million), or NT$1.21 per share, from a profit of NT$535 million, or 16 cents, a year ago.
It's the third straight quarterly loss for Macronix, which is trying to lessen its dependence on Japan's Nintendo by increasing production of flash memory chips, which store information until it is upgraded.
Sales slumped after Nintendo introduced the GameCube, its newest video-game console, analysts said. Fewer Macronix chips are used in the GameCube than in the Game Boy Advance, an older product, they said. Macronix President Miin Wu (吳敏求) said prices for its chips fell but declined to say how much.
The company's average factory use fell to 64 percent in the second quarter from 88 percent last year and rose from 50 percent in the first quarter. Factory use will be similar in the third quarter from the previous quarter, Wu said.
