As the economy continues to slow down, only 56.6 percent of companies are willing to hire new graduates, compared with 75.8 percent last year, a survey released yesterday showed.
Companies in the service, medicine, agriculture, trade and logistics sectors are more likely to hire new graduates, the survey by 1111 Job Bank (1111人力銀行) showed.
Salespersons and research and development engineers are the most common positions open to new graduates, it showed.
The companies that are disinclined to hire new graduates cited mainly a lack of vacancies, bad experience with such workers and a preference for experienced workers.
Companies are reluctant to hire new graduates because of a sluggish economy, 1111 Job Bank vice president Daniel Lee (李大華) said.
However, the average monthly salary offered to new graduates increased to NT$27,254 — 2.87 percent higher than the figure for last year, the poll showed.
The highest pay goes to recruits in the fields of medicine, agriculture, information technology, construction and real estate, the survey showed.
For new graduates of two-year colleges, the average starting salary is NT$26,335 per month, which is 1.8 percent higher than last year, the poll showed.
Those with an undergraduate degree could earn NT$27,321 per month on average, representing an increase of 1.68 percent from last year, while those with graduate degrees could receive NT$28,856, rising 0.9 percent, the survey found.
The poll, conducted from May 3 through Tuesday among the job bank’s institutional members, collected 834 valid samples through telephone interviews and online questionnaires.
