Quanta Computer Inc (廣達) and Acer Inc (宏碁) yesterday reported strong monthly growth in revenues last month, driven by growing demand for notebook computers.
Revenue of Quanta, which assembles Apple Inc’s 12-inch MacBook and Apple Watch, increased 8.7 percent monthly to NT$90.93 billion (US$2.77 billion) last month, marking the second-highest monthly sales this year.
Quanta said shipments of its notebook computers, which accounted for 60 percent of the firm’s total revenue, jumped 28.12 percent monthly to 4.1 million units last month, compared with 3.2 million units in July.
The company said notebook shipments this month would be flat from last month but expects shipments this quarter to exceed its previous forecast.
“We previously forecast this quarter’s shipments to grow 5 percent at most from last quarter’s 10.7 million units, but now we think shipments may outpace our previous estimate,” said a company official, who declined to be named.
On an annual basis, Quanta’s sales last month rose 11.9 percent from NT$81.25 billion a year ago, thanks mainly to contribution from the company’s cloud-computing business and sales from the assembling business for the Apple Watch, which hit the market at the end of April.
Quanta expects sales contribution from the non-notebook business to continue to rise in the second half of the year, after they accounted for 25 percent of the firm’s total revenue of NT$251 billion last quarter, the official said.
The official declined to provide shipment figures of its wearable products.
Acer’s sales last month dropped 29.66 percent from a year ago, but jumped 24.34 percent to NT$20.99 billion from July, the company said yesterday.
The company did not provide shipment figures for its notebook computers, which contributed 53 percent to its total sales last month.
Taipei-based market research group Digitimes Research said on Sunday that Acer’s notebook shipment last month jumped 40 percent from July, thanks to decreasing inventories and retailers’ shipment requests for traditional peak season.
Quanta shares rose 2.8 percent to NT$62.5 yesterday, while Acer shares advanced 3.33 percent to NT$13.95.
