The Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) yesterday announced it has approved requests by three local financial holding institutions to expand their overseas businesses, reflecting the government’s encouragement of the “Asian League” charge.
Cathay Life Insurance Co (國泰人壽), the life insurance arm of Cathay Financial Holding Co (國泰金控), now has the go-ahead to acquire a 30 percent stake in Philippine lender Rizal Commercial Banking Corp for NT$17.1 billion (US$542.82 million).
Cathay United Bank Co (國泰世華銀行), Cathay Financial’s banking arm, already has an office in the Philippines.
CTBC Life Insurance Co Ltd’s (中國信託人壽) application to buy a 19.99 percent stake in its Chinese peer, ABC Life Insurance Co Ltd (農銀人壽), was also approved, as was Fubon Life Insurance’s (富邦人壽) plan to set up a subsidiary in Hong Kong — its fourth overseas base.
CTBC Life, a subsidiary of CTBC Financial Holding Co (中信金控), may invest a total of NT$8.5 billion in the acquisition of ABC Life, with the deal expected to be completed in the first half of the year, the statement said.

Gasoline and diesel prices at domestic fuel stations are to fall NT$0.2 per liter this week, down for a second consecutive week, CPC Corp, Taiwan (台灣中油) and Formosa Petrochemical Corp (台塑石化) announced yesterday. Effective today, gasoline prices at CPC and Formosa stations are to drop to NT$26.4, NT$27.9 and NT$29.9 per liter for 92, 95 and 98-octane unleaded gasoline respectively, the companies said in separate statements.
