German buyer visits
Microsoft Germany manager Thorsten Thomas is to visit Taiwan to procure tablet computers, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) said. Thomas will hold procurement meetings in Taipei today to look for suppliers, TAITRA said. His orders are expected to reach US$24 million, or about 700,000 tablets. Microsoft Taiwan said it was unaware of Thomas’ plan.

UK trade official to visit
UK Trade and Investment chief executive Nick Baird will visit Taiwan from June 3 to June 5, the British Trade and Cultural Office has announced. Baird will promote UK firms’ participation in rail, low carbon, renewable energy and creative industry projects in Taiwan, while seeking investment in the UK, the office said in a statement. He will also witness the signing of two agreements between UK and Taiwanese firms. Funkwerk Information Technologies York Ltd and China Engineering Consultants Inc will sign a memorandum of understanding on collaborating to enhance railway efficiency, while the UK Railway Industry Association will sign a deal with the Chung-Hwa Railway Industry Development Association on information exchanges.

HTC One certified in US
HTC Corp (宏達電) has announced the new HTC One as its first HTC pro Certified device in the US. The certification means that the device meets security and encryption standards that make it a good enterprise solution for companies with security concerns. The HTC One has level-one government-grade security, flexible mobile device management solutions and an array of HTC Sense-enabled productivity capabilities, HTC said in a news release.

As part of the agreement, TSMC, the world’s biggest contract chipmaker, would contract turnkey advanced packaging and test services from Amkor at their planned facility in Peoria, Arizona, a joint statement released yesterday said. An Indian factory producing iPhone components resumed work yesterday after a fire that halted production — the third blaze to disrupt Apple Inc’s local supply chain since the start of last year.
