LED chipmaker Unity Opto Technology Co (東貝光電) yesterday said that strong demand for large-screen back-lit LED TVs from China boosted its first-quarter sales by a double-digit percentage year-on-year, and forecast that sales would remain robust this quarter.
Unity Opto said in a filing submitted to the Taiwan Stock Exchange that its consolidated revenue last month grew 30 percent month-on-month and 54.73 percent year-on-year to NT$650.56 million (US$21.65 million).
That boosted quarterly revenue by 63 percent year-on-year to NT$1.67 billion from NT$1.02 billion, which was better than its estimates.
The company predicted continued strong sales this quarter, as clients ramp up orders ahead of China’s May Day holiday.
Meanwhile, Lextar Electronics Corp (隆達電子), an LED manufacturing arm of AU Optronics Corp (友達光電), yesterday said sales last month totaled NT$1.09 billion, increasing 31.44 percent from NT$827.93 million in February and rising 36.51 percent from NT$796.65 million in March last year.
For the first three months of the year, accumulated sales amounted to NT$2.87 billion, up 30.72 percent from the same period last year, Lextar said in a stock exchange filing.
Another LED chip supplier, Formosa Epitaxy Inc (璨圓光電) said its consolidated revenue last month grew 75.95 percent month-on-month to NT$400.48 million. However, it was down 0.39 percent year-on-year from NT$402.04 million.
Formosa Epitaxy said first-quarter consolidated revenue fell 12.66 percent year-on-year to NT$937.42 million, compared with NT$1.07 billion a year earlier.
Real estate agent and property developer JSL Construction & Development Co (愛山林) led the average compensation rankings among companies listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) last year, while contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) finished 14th. JSL Construction paid its employees total average compensation of NT$4.78 million (US$159,701), down 13.5 percent from a year earlier, but still ahead of the most profitable listed tech giants, including TSMC, TWSE data showed.
