On a monthly basis, the nation’s economy will likely grow 0.8 percent this month, 0.4 percent next month and 0.3 percent in June, Cathay Financial Holding Co’s (國泰金控) newly-appointed chief economic adviser Kuan Chung-ming (管中閔) said yesterday.
Prior to that, the nation’s economy likely saw GDP growth of more than 1 percent in each of the first three months of this year, Kuan said.
Kuan, however, didn’t elaborate on the figures yesterday because the financial service provider’s economic research department, under Kuan’s leadership since October last year, is scheduled to make public its first-ever forecast of monthly GDP figures late next month, after the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) updates its latest real GDP figure for the first quarter and its GDP forecast for the rest of the year.
A monthly GDP forecast, as a supplement to the DGBAS’ quarterly figures would provide a more up to date and comprehensive view at shorter intervals of the nation’s macroeconomic development, said Kuan, who is also a researcher at Academia Sinica.
“We want to make good use of the monthly GDP forecast to better inform our customers on the nation’s economic ups and downs,” Cathay Financial president Chen Tsu-pei (陳祖培) said.
