Multimedia consumer products, including portable navigation devices (PNDs), are expected to become hot sales items beginning next year, the government-funded Institute for Information Industry reported yesterday.
The production and marketing of PNDs and portable media players (PMPs) are expected to pick up remarkably next year, with steady growth in global demand, said Lucy Ho (何心宇), a senior analyst at the institute’s Marketing Intelligence Center.
Ho also predicted that sales of mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and automotive video and infotainment (AVI) equipment would begin to climb next year.
Ho said that PNDs, PMPs, MIDs and AVIs would constitute the “four pillars” of the world’s multimedia consumer electronic products next year.
Sales of PNDs are estimated to top 41 million units globally this year and soar by another 23 percent to reach some 51 million units next year, Ho said.
Sales of PMPs are forecast to reach 217 million units worldwide this year, soaring to 231 million by the end of next year, up 6.7 percent year-on-year, Ho said.
However, she said that although prospects for global sales of MIDs and AVIs are promising in the years to come — despite a predicted brief slowdown as a result of the global economic upheaval — the two emerging consumer electronic products will still have to first cross the popularity and massive application thresholds before their true potential can be realized.
