Chunghwa Telecom Co (中華電信), the nation’s top telecom operator, said yesterday that net income grew 8 percent last month, helped by narrowing losses from a foreign currency derivatives contract.
Net income rose 8.16 percent to NT$5.3 billion (US$166.4 million) last month, or NT$0.55 per share, the company said in a stock exchange filing. Revenue dropped 1.3 percent year-on-year to NT$15.75 billion last month, it said.
As the NT dollar depreciated by NT$0.93, or 3 percent, to NT$31.52 against the greenback last month from the end of July, the unrealized losses from a foreign currency derivatives contract were reduced to about NT$1.57 billion last month, the company said.
The unrealized losses from the contract were NT$3.11 billion in July based on the company’s assessment at the time.
For the first eight months of this year, the company reported NT$32.73 billion in net income, or NT$3.42 per share.
Rival Taiwan Mobile Co (台灣大哥大) reported a net income of NT$1.34 billion, or NT$0.45 per share, on a revenue of NT$5.88 billion, in a filing yesterday.
Far EasTone Telecommunications Co Ltd (遠傳電信) saw its net income reach NT$1.16 billion, or NT$0.35 per share, on revenue of NT$5.27 billion, the company said in a stock exchange filing yesterday.
