Of the nation's 5.2 million taxpayers, nearly 2 million had not filed their tax reports as of yesterday, and have only today left to complete the annual chore.
EXTENDED HOURS
Tax offices nationwide will extend their office hours until 7pm tonight and forgo the lunch break to collect tax reports, while officials urged taxpayers to use the 24-hour online tax-filing program before midnight.
Any taxpayers who file their reports after the June 2 deadline, will face a penalty equivalent to 1 percent of their tax dues every two days, the tax agency said.
Agency statistics showed that more than 2.4 million taxpayers, as of 3pm yesterday, have used the 24-hour online tax-filling program to complete their annual filings.
That was close to the agency’s goal. The tax agency had previously expressed the hope that 50 percent, or 2.6 million, of taxpayers would use the online filing system.
Some 961,072 taxpayers have filed their taxes in person as of last Thursday, statistics showed on Friday.
LESS THAN HALF
The tax administration in Taipei said on Friday that only 47.3 percent, or 373,334, of the city’s taxpayers had filed their taxes as of Thursday.
Foreigners filing taxes in Taiwan must file their tax returns in person at their local tax office.

Application-specific integrated circuit designer Faraday Technology Corp (智原) yesterday said that although revenue this quarter would decline 30 percent from last quarter, it retained its full-year forecast of revenue growth of 100 percent. The company attributed the quarterly drop to a slowdown in customers’ production of chips using Faraday’s advanced packaging technology. The company is still confident about its revenue growth this year, given its strong “design-win” — or the projects it won to help customers design their chips, Faraday president Steve Wang (王國雍) told an online earnings conference. “The design-win this year is better than we expected. We believe we will win

While China’s leaders use their economic and political might to fight US President Donald Trump’s trade war “to the end,” its army of social media soldiers are embarking on a more humorous campaign online. Trump’s tariff blitz has seen Washington and Beijing impose eye-watering duties on imports from the other, fanning a standoff between the economic superpowers that has sparked global recession fears and sent markets into a tailspin. Trump says his policy is a response to years of being “ripped off” by other countries and aims to bring manufacturing to the US, forcing companies to employ US workers. However, China’s online warriors
