A survey by the Foreseeing Innovative New Digiservices, the Web site of the Institute for Information Industry (III, 資訊工業策進會), found that mobile/wireless network penetration had reached 24.2 percent last year, an increase of 8.6 percentage points from the previous year.
Wireless network penetration reached 19.7 percent, 7.7 percentage points higher than in 2006, making it the engine behind the overall growth in mobile/wireless network penetration.
Mobile network penetration reached 9.7 percent, an increase of 1.6 percentage points over 2006 and a marked increase over previous years.
The survey found that the penetration rate of individuals using mobile equipment to connect to the Internet or wireless local area networks had reached 24.2 percent, an increase of 8.6 percentage points over 2006, while an estimated 5.5 million users used mobile or wireless networks to connect to the Internet, an increase of 56.8 percent over 2006.
Among users who connected to the Internet through mobile devices, 82.6 percent used mobile phone handsets. The number of users connecting with a 3G network card and a notebook also increased.
Although General Packet Radio Service remained the most common type of mobile connection, that proportion was falling, while the proportion of 3G users increased from 21.6 percent in 2006 to 33.5 percent last year.
For wireless connections, 81.9 percent were made through notebooks and 22.1 percent by desktop computers with wireless network cards. Only a minority connected through WiFi-equipped Smartphones or PDAs.
The information came from the 2007 survey of current use and requirements for broadband, mobile or wireless networks in households.
The telephone survey was conducted between Aug. 4 and Aug. 23 last year.
The survey found that 3G phone use in Taiwan had reached 16.5 percent last year.
There are now 3.77 million 3G users in Taiwan, an increase of 62.5 percent, the survey said. In 2006, 3G use increased by 6.3 percentage points.
At the same time, 3G handset and 3G account penetration increased 23.6 percent and 21.6 percent respectively, an increase of 15 percent and 10.2 percent over 2006.
