The overall job availability in October dropped approximately 10 percent compared with the same month last year as the economy slowed down, 104 Job Bank (104人力銀行) said yesterday.
Data from the online employment service provider shows that job availability saw the greatest decline in the financial, car and motorcycle, beauty and hairdressing, transportation and logistics, and publishing and culture industries.
Job bank officials said the financial industry had suffered the greatest impact from declining consumer confidence, rising interest rates and credit card debt, with the industry's demand for credit card and loan agents registering a significant drop.
The number of job opportunities in other industries, however, rose more than 10 percent last month, the officials said.
Job openings in the telecommunications industry increased 67 percent, they said.
The life insurance industry registered a 54 percent rise in jobs thanks to the increasing senior population and the popularity of retirement financial management, the officials said.
Meanwhile, the number of job opportunities in the environmental protection industry rose 22 percent, while job openings in the real estate industry jumped 12 percent.
A survey conducted by National Central University released on Wednesday showed the consumer confidence index dropped to a five-year-low last month.
The unemployment rate fell to 3.90 percent in October from 3.96 percent in September, and was down from 4.07 percent for the same period a year earlier, the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said.

Betting sites have long been used to gauge which way voters might be leaning ahead of the world’s biggest televised live music event. However, bookmakers highlight a huge increase in engagement in recent years — and this year in particular. “We’ve already passed 2023’s total activity and

China yesterday announced anti-dumping duties as high as 74.9 percent on imports of polyoxymethylene (POM) copolymers, a type of engineering plastic, from Taiwan, the US, the EU and Japan. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce’s findings conclude a probe launched in May last year, shortly after the US sharply increased tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, computer chips and other imports. POM copolymers can partially replace metals such as copper and zinc, and have various applications, including in auto parts, electronics and medical equipment, the Chinese ministry has said. In January, it said initial investigations had determined that dumping was taking place, and implemented preliminary
