Three armed men hijacked a truck loaded with DRAM chips worth an estimated NT$10 million to NT$15 million as the chips were being transported from PowerTech Technology (
The truck contained over 90,000 128 and 256Mb DRAM (dynamic random access memory) chips bound for Powerchip Semiconductor Corp (力晶半導體股]公司) in the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, to which PowerTech had subcontracted the testing and packaging of the chips.
The truck was hijacked when it stopped at an intersection on Shih-hsing Rd in Chupei. Three men, armed with knives and guns, commandeered the truck and drove it to Kuan-hsi Liu-fu village (

Powerchip Semiconductor issued a statement after the theft in which it noted that the hijacked chips accounted for only a small portion of their total output, which it said was between 10 million and 20 million DRAM chips a month. The company said it would be able to make up the loss from its stocks.
