A three-day forum aimed at promoting information exchanges among Taiwan's biotechnological firms opened in Taipei yesterday, with David Flores, president of BioCentury Publishing Co urging greater cooperation in the sector.

The biochip, purported to be the first "live" chip in the world, was developed by GeneMaster and the Tri Service General Hospital (三軍總醫院) in Taipei, according to the chip's inventor Chang Jung-sen, a professor from the National Central University.
Chang said the chip can diagnose meningitis and identify the strain of bacterium causing it within 24 hours.
There are around 25 bacterium which can cause the disease, which is common in Taiwan.
Real estate agent and property developer JSL Construction & Development Co (愛山林) led the average compensation rankings among companies listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE) last year, while contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC, 台積電) finished 14th.
