Several dissatisfied employees in Citibank's credit card department petitioned Taipei City's Bureau of Labor Affairs (
Citibank recently adjusted the department's salary system after adopting a "no annual fee" approach for its customers. The dispute revolves around the fact that the base monthly salary of NT$60,000 for some managers was cut to NT$18,500 last month, down by roughly 70 percent.
Employees said they were informed about the slashed salaries at the end of last February and demanded they be able to appeal the new rule by March 1. If credit card applications total less than 60 a month, they're salaries will be reduced, employees said.
The labor affairs bureau suggested large corporations like Citibank negotiate with employees beforehand if a salary adjustment is needed.
It also hoped Citibank's employees and management would meet again following yesterday's failed mediation.
Chen Chao-ju (陳昭如), a Citibank manager, told local media yesterday that the company had approached employees before it sought to reduce employee salaries.
She said the company had received approval from each employee in advance in order to cope with government labor regulations.
Citibank currently has some 200-plus employees in its credit card department, including some 30 full time staff.
The bank said there would be no change in employees' benefits, including vacation time or bonuses.
