France and Taiwan will step up intellectual property rights (IPR) cooperation said Taiwan's Director-General of the Intellectual Property Office Chen Ming-pang (陳明邦) on Thursday.
Chen made the remarks after concluding talks with his French counterpart Philippine Hangard in France. Chen said that both sides discussed the two countries' laws and regulations concerning intellectual property rights protection.
Chen said both France and Taiwan will step up their cooperation in the protection of trade marks and patents, respect for intellectual property rights of all forms of industrial technology, and further protect the rights of consumers.
The consultations were held in western France's rich brandy producing region.
Chen noted that French wine has always been popular with Taiwan consumers, but he said that some rogue businessmen have tried to sell wine falsely labeled as French for profits at the expense of consumers.
Consultations about this problem have led to an agreement between both sides to set up a comprehensive certification system under which the original information for all trade mark and brand wines will be provided in order to protect the image of French spirit manufacturers and the rights of Taiwan consumers.
Meanwhile, the American Institute in Taiwan will hold an IPR seminar in Taipei on Oct. 30, with the aim of providing judges, prosecutors, and other officials with IPR information.

New vehicle sales in Taiwan plunged about 37 percent sequentially last month as the long Lunar New Year holiday and 228 Peace Memorial Day holiday cut short the number of working days, along with the lingering uncertainty over import tax cuts on US vehicles, market researcher U-Car said in a report yesterday.
