Fujitsu Ltd's fiscal first-quarter net loss widened, prompted by a decline in sales of flat screens for computers, chips for mobile phones and telecommunications equipment for companies such as WorldCom Inc. The supplier of fiber-optic networks to WorldCom had a net loss of ?56.4 billion (US$479 million), or ?28.19 a share, in the three months ended June 30, compared with a net loss of ?55.4 billion, or ?28.04 a share, a year ago. Sales fell 10 percent to ?983 billion. Fujitsu's network-equipment sales fell after phone operators, which amassed debts by overbuilding, reduced spending. Fujitsu reiterated it will break even for the full-year on expectations chip sales will recover from a first-quarter drop, making up for weakness at its telecommunications business. The company said it booked a charge of ?25.9 billion in the first quarter for reorganization costs.
