China's flagship air carrier will launch the first direct route from Beijing to New York, passing over the Arctic Circle as a shortcut to reduce flight time, the government news agency said Thursday. Air China will start service to New York City beginning Sept. 27, the Xinhua News Agency said. The direct flight and new route, which will use Boeing 747-400 aircraft, will reduce travel time from 21 to 13 hours, Xinhua said. It said the flights would leave at 2pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Beijing's Capital Airport and land in New York City at 3:30pm the same day. Return flights will leave New York at 5:30pm and arrive in Beijing at 7pm the following day. The report did not specify which of metropolitan New York City's three international airports the flights would use.
