Vietnam's export earnings fell 4.2 percent in the first seven months of this year compared with the same period last year due to a sharp fall in prices for key oil and agricultural products, official figures showed yesterday. Exports of US$8.72 billion failed to keep pace with an import bill of US$10.17 billion, leaving Vietnam with a hefty trade deficit of 1.34 billion dollars, according to the preliminary figures from the General Statistics Department. Receipts from Vietnam's key oil exports fell 17.8 percent, while the value of its main agricultural exports also plunged. Rice exports fell 11 percent, coffee by 43 percent, fruit and vegetables 40 percent and pepper 9 percent. However, peanut exports were up 175 percent, rubber 136 percent, cashew 26 percent and green tea 23 percent.
