Toshiba Corp, the world's second-biggest chipmaker, said it will report a fiscal first-quarter loss that is narrower than the company expected. The company, which posted a record group net loss of ?254 billion (US$2.19 billion) in the year ended March 31, "benefited from cost reductions" in the three months ended June 30, Chairman Taizo Nishimuro said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. Sales were in line with expectations, he said. The world's largest notebook computer maker last year sold an unprofitable factory that makes computer-memory chips in Virginia to Micron Technology Inc. The Japanese company also closed some other chip plants and pared 11,000 jobs, or 6 percent of employees.
