Claims in US still high

STAFF WRITER

The number of US workers filing new claims for state unemployment benefits probably stayed above 400,000 last week, indicating sluggish demand for labor as the economy climbs out of recession, economists said in advance of yesterday's Labor Department report. State unemployment offices are expected to have received 410,000 applications in the week that ended Saturday, based on the median of 33 forecasts in a Bloomberg News survey. While down from 418,000 the week before last, it would mark the ninth straight reading above 400,000. "Layoffs are still running fairly strong and hiring hasn't begun either," said Tim Rogers, chief economist at Briefing.com in Boston.
