Meet in Mexico planned

STAFF WRITER

Ministers of the WTO will next meet in the eastern Mexican city of Cancun in September 2003 to review progress on the Doha round of trade negotiations, the organisation's spokesman said on Monday. The meeting, set to fall mid-way through the new trade liberalisation round launched in Doha last November, will take place from Sept. 10-14 next year, Keith Rockwell said. Delegates of the 144-member WTO agreed the dates and venue by consensus at Monday's meeting of the General Council, or the WTO's ruling body. After Mexico offered to host the 2003 conference, two cities were in the running -- Cancun and Acapulco. But Cancun was considered to have some advantages, boasting direct flights from North and South America and Europe and hotel rooms for 20,000 people.
