Nigeria wants a better deal for local staff and contractors in the country's multi-billion-dollar oil and gas sector, which is dominated by multinationals, officials said yesterday. The parastatal Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC) last week wrote to two multinationals to tell them to reserve some key jobs and positions for Nigerians. US oil giants ChevronTexaco and ExxonMobil have been directed to create a deputy managing director post for a Nigerian, a top NNPC official said. "We want more Nigerian participation in the sector," he said. He said the NNPC also wanted the foreign firms to subcontract more projects to local firms to enhance their skills and participation in the industry. "Projects on drilling fluid, mud slide controls, casing, tuning services and wireline completion are to be awarded to solely Nigerian firms," the official said.
