Japanese vehicles tops for safety

Vehicles made by three Japanese automakers head a list of the most reliable automobiles compiled by Germany's technical testing authority (TUeV).

After analysing statistics from 7.6 million roadworthiness tests that are compulsory in Germany for all used vehicles every two years, the Japanese cars scored best.

In the category of two- to three-year-old vehicles, the Subaru Forester was most reliable, followed by the Mazda Demio and the Toyota Yaris.

At the bottom of the same list with most safety-relevant mechanical faults were the Chrysler Voyager, Ford Galaxy, Opel Frontera, Seat Alhambra, VW Sharan, Fiat Marea and Renault Laguna. In four- to five-year-old cars, the Mercedes SL topped the list just ahead of the Porsche Boxter.
