Narita International Airport agrees to reduce landing fees

Narita International Airport outside Tokyo has agreed to slash its landing fees, which are some of the world's highest, after coming under pressure from the airline industry, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said yesterday.
"It seems that Narita has understood our message," IATA director-general Giovanni Bisignani told the association's general meeting being held in Tokyo.
"A substantial decrease in landing fees later this week could be the start of a new relationship," he said.
IATA persistently lobbied the Japanese government and Narita authorities to slash by some 20 percent the airport's landing fees which are now pegged at ?2,400 (US$22) per tonne of plane weight.
One company employee said the reduction would be between 15 and 20 percent and be effective from October.
