Singapore, US to sign free-trade pact

LANDMARK TREATY The deal reached between Prime Minister Goh and President Bush will help cement Washington's economic and political ties with Southeast Asia

An industrial estate in largely Muslim Indonesia's island of Bintan near Singapore will be the first beneficiary of this initiative.

ASEAN is Washington's fifth largest export market after Canada, the European Union, Mexico and Japan, with two-way trade estimated at US$120 billion in 2002.
