American jeans icon struggling

COOL STATEMENT On the eve of its 150th anniversary, Levi's is battling allegations of accounting irregularities and swiftly declining sales

Last quarter the jeans maker reported a loss of US$24 million as sales fell in the US and Europe and it cautioned that full-year cash operating margins would fall below its prior target.

Since sales started sliding in 1997, the company has shut factories, cut thousands of jobs and sought to transform itself from an apparel manufacturer into an apparel marketer. All but two of its plants are now closed, including its original facilities in San Francisco.
