Microsoft forcasts gains in computing for autos

BLOOMBERG , DEARBORN, MICHIGAN

Microsoft Corp, the world's largest software maker, expects "huge" gains in installing computing devices inside cars in the next few years, Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said.

"Five or six years from now, we think 100 percent of the cars will have some sort of telematics device, and we want to have at least a piece of all of that," Ballmer said in an interview after a speech at a Microsoft automotive conference in Dearborn, Michigan.

Microsoft, which had average annual sales gains of 38 percent in the 1990s, had growth of 12 percent in the year that ended in June. The company is trying to revive orders with new programs and in the past six months released software for tablet computers and added plans for watches and refrigerator magnets that display data.

"There will be huge progress" in the spread of technology such as voice recognition or downloading digital music, he said in the speech. "If people sleep eight hours, Microsoft ought to be able to provide them with information the other 16 hours."
