Intel Corp reduced prices of many microprocessors used in laptops by as much as 38 percent as the world's biggest chipmaker prepares to sell new chips based on wireless technology.
Intel reduced the price of its 2.2GHz Mobile Pentium4 Processor M to US$348 from US$562 in November, according to a chart on the company's Internet site. Its 2GHz processor was slashed 31 percent to US$241 and two other chips in the same category fell 18 percent and 14 percent. The price changes were effective yesterday.
Chief Executive Craig Barrett said Thursday that in the first half of this year the company would introduce chips supporting its Centrino technology for notebook computers that will include features supporting wireless connections, extended battery life and faster performance. His comments were made at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Intel often lowers prices when it releases new chips. Prices on the Mobile Pentium III Processor M were cut 24 percent for the 1GHz model and 18 percent for the 933MHz chip.
