Slow reform could cripple China's economy

COMPLICATIONS As China's handover of power to a new leadership draws near, experts warn that there are a number of clouds on the horizon for the world's fastest-growing major economy

However WTO membership will undoubtedly help reform, analysts say.

Some changes will be forced on unwilling sectors of the economy to allow China to meet international obligations under its WTO membership.

Morgan Stanley's Roach said China's government had been hugely successful in managing the economy and achieving strong economic growth since the Asian financial crisis. "But as China comes of age, it will be critical to manage its economy ... from the standpoint of global objectives as well," he warned.
