PIONEER When British author Beatrix Potter first sewed together a Peter Rabbit toy to be sold with her books, she established a business model now copied globally

Books and licensed products are on sale in more than 110 countries worldwide, while The World of Beatrix Potter licensed property, which incorporates Peter Rabbit products, turns over US$500 million a year.

The centenary of The Tale of Peter Rabbit has flushed out a host of celebrities and literary critics to endorse its enduring merits, but perhaps the strangest plaudit comes from the publication Progressive Greetings Worldwide: "Sustaining a property until it gains the ultimate accolade of `classic' is the Holy Grail of licensing. It has taken decades of consistent behavior to accumulate such consumer trust and devotion," it says. That's the grown-up way of saying, "I love this book."
