Tyson Foods Inc will close three US plants, firing at least 1,100 workers in Michigan, as the largest US meat processor consolidates operations following its purchase of IBP Inc.
IBP plants in Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan, will be closed March 15, and offices in Farmington Hills, Michigan, on April 1, the company said. The facilities employ about 1,100.
Tyson also will shut its DFG Foods plant and office in Chicago and offer about 200 workers jobs at another facility nearby.
Tyson, the largest chicken producer, completed its US$4.4 billion acquisition of beef and pork producer IBP in September.
Tyson plans to shift the Michigan production to existing plants in Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas that can make products such as hot dogs, luncheon meats and hams more efficiently.
