Drugmakers say WTO patent deal is no concession

PHARMACEUTICALS A spokesman for a US association said that the agreement was merely a political declaration and not an agreement by firms

BLOOMBERG , WASHINGTON

"This problem is going to be fixed," said James Love, director of the Consumer Project on Technology, a non-governmental organization that has lobbied for reduced drug costs.

Talks with US and European negotiators on the matter should ``come up with a solution by the end of next year."

Abdul Razak Dawood, Pakistan's trade minister, attributed success in the agreement to anti-AIDS activists, who brought the issue into the global spotlight.

The health declaration is "a success story for poor countries and for civil society," he said.

Michael Bailey, of the UK-based health charity Oxfam, agreed that the "huge profile given to the issue changed the political climate," enabling governments from Washington to Zurich to face down drug-industry lobbyists.
